Can You Visualize a Movie of Your Goal?

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

Are you having problems getting started with a goal you set for yourself at the beginning of the year?  Try to picture yourself in a movie doing the goal.  If you can see a movie in your mind, then the goal is probably concrete and specific enough to make it happen.  If you can’t visualize a movie, then the goal is probably still too fuzzy for you to get started.

For example, if you have a goal to eat healthier – that goal is probably not specific enough to create your mind movie.  But if you start to visualize yourself in your kitchen with a bowl of fruit in a prominent spot on your counter, and you grab a piece of fruit from that bowl when you’re hungry, then you’re starting to get specific enough to see it playing out in your mind.  It’s helpful to break our goals into tiny habits that bring us toward what we want to accomplish.  And seeing those tiny habits in our brains help us identify the steps we need to take.
