Goals Seasonal Slump

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

Do you have a season of the year when being goal-focused feels next level difficult?  For example, it’s summer right now, and for many families this is a season of vastly different routines from the rest of the year.  Kids are home from school.  Vacations away from home are more prevalent.  Normal life feels different in the summer for many.

With all of these changes in routine, your goals may get lost in the mix.  If you have a goal to practice an instrument daily but you’re going to be traveling for weeks with your family and don’t have space to pack your instrument, then that goal will probably be interrupted.  If you have a goal to visit a new waterfall in your area every week but your kids are now home every day and not interested in waterfall chasing, then that goal might hit the back burner.

Life has seasonality, and at times we may want to work with the rhythms of life rather than beat our heads against them.  Instead of feeling bad for slacking during a busy season, we can reframe those periods as our family-focused, non-goal-focused time.  We can always pick our goals up again in the fall when routines are more normal with fresh new energy.  We can take purposeful breaks and pick up our goals again once the seasonal slump is over.  These are our lives.  We are the ones in charge.
