Permission to Sleep - Granted

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

So many of the stories I see equate success with deprivation.  For example, if you want to be successful in [insert industry here], say goodbye to sleep.  Hustle culture/deprivation stories have never appealed to me.  I’m attracted to tales of people who have accomplished much in life but also take care of themselves.

Google “Jennifer Lopez sleep,” and you’ll see a bunch of stories where Jennifer Lopez attributes her well-being to getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.  She is a wildly successful human, and she takes sleep very seriously.  Her story is proof that success and sleep don’t need to be mutually exclusive.  Mariah Carey, Matthew McConaughey, Arianna Huffington, and many more also prioritize sleep in order to be the best version of themselves.

Some people can function on a few hours of sleep.  Based on life experience, I’m pretty sure I’m not one of those people.  If you also find that you’re not your best with little sleep, maybe hearing stories of successful people extolling the virtues of ample sleep will help you (as they help me) give yourself permission to prioritize your nightly recharges.  If your body needs a certain number of hours of sleep (as most human bodies do), then you’re doing yourself and those around you a service by giving your body what it needs to optimize.
