Deep Dive Series: The Power of No According to a Former Monk
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
A few weeks ago, I referenced Jay Shetty’s September 5, 2025, podcast detailing the 10 lessons he’s learned in the last year. The second lesson in his list was about the importance of saying no. In the last year Jay learned that every yes that betrays yourself erodes connection and every no that protects your truth deepens connection. No isn’t rejection, it’s honesty in its purest form.
Jay Shetty is a former monk who is now a successful author, podcaster, entrepreneur, and life coach. If a man of his caliber who has dedicated his life to helping people says that saying no is one of the 10 most important lessons that he’s learned in the last year, then I think it grants us all permission to utilize the word no when needed without guilt as well.
