Deep Dive Series: The Power of No Leading to Win-Win Situations
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
In the February 27, 2023 episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast, Mel was discussing tools to say no without guilt or drama. She tells the story of a business trip she took to Las Vegas. It was 8:30pm, and she had a speech to give the next day, but she and her party were hungry. They went to a casino restaurant for food. Mel shoveled her food in and wanted the check immediately so she could get up to her room and go to bed. But a member of her party was only three bites in when Mel was finished. She said people-pleaser Mel would usually just say nothing and sit at the table yelling in her head for her friend to hurry up. But instead, Mel said no to that habit and asked if her friend would be ok with her going up to the room so she could go to bed and get some rest for her speech the next day. And her friend was relieved. She didn’t want Mel to sit and resentfully watch her slowly eat her food. She wanted Mel to do what was best for her, and she wanted to sit and savor her food. Because Mel wasn’t afraid to speak up and tactfully ask a question, they both got exactly what they wanted from the situation.
So often we don’t even ask simple questions because we don’t want to feel discomfort. But sometimes that simple question can lead to a win-win scenario for everyone involved. Advocate for yourself, ask the question.
