Deep Dive Series: The Power of No By Feeling the Pain, Then Making a Rule

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

Making no a routine can make it easier to utilize the word.  We can make no a routine by identifying the points of pain in our lives and making a rule to avoid those pains.

For example, if eating dairy gives you a stomachache, then let that pain be your guide to create a rule to say no to eating dairy going forward.  If your significant other expresses dissatisfaction each time you focus on your phone for prolonged periods of time during family dinner, then let that pain be your guide to create a rule to not bring your phone to the table.

Pain is usually a useful trigger to tell us when something doesn’t belong in our lives.  So set your mental filters to notice any time you experience any kind of pain in your life, and then brainstorm and practice solutions and rules that help you say no to that pain in the future.
