Deep Dive Series: The Power of No, Inside and Out

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

Sometimes we wrestle with ourselves when requests are made.  We don’t know if we should say yes or no.  There’s some helpful logic that can be applied when trying to make these decisions.

When we’re being compliant from the inside out, that’s compassion.  In this circumstance we truly want to help, and a yes is appropriate.

However, when we’re compliant from the outside and resentful on the inside, that’s sacrificial.  In this circumstance, we don’t truly want to help, and no is probably the most appropriate response.  Of course, there’s always going to be nuance, and sometimes we’ll say yes to sacrificial requests for a good reason.  But in general, this compassionate vs. sacrificial question can be a good place to start when deciding whether we say yes or we say no.
