Deep Dive Series: The Power of No by Understanding True Informed Consent

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

In last week’s blog post, I recommended Dr. Sunita Sah’s book Defy: The Power of No in a World that Demands Yes.  In her book, Dr. Sah outlines the elements of consent.  When making a decision, ask yourself the following questions:

Do I have the capacity to make this decision?

Do I have the knowledge necessary to make this decision?

Do I understand what is being asked of me and the consequences of saying yes?

Do I have the freedom to say no?

Only if you can answer yes to all four of these inquiries do you have the ability to give true informed consent.  If you can’t answer every question in the affirmative, then you may want to consider saying no until you have further information.
