Deep Dive Series: The Power of No Using the Right Now Test
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
The June 23rd episode of the podcast A Slight Change of Plans with Maya Shankar was called “Sahil Bloom: Building A (Truly) Happy Life.” During their conversation, Maya and Sahil talked about the right now test.
Sahil explained that if he receives a personal or professional request for two months from now, he always asks himself if he would do the request right now. If the answer is yes, then he says yes to the request that will happen in two months. If the answer is no, he declines the request. He knows he probably won’t magically have more time and desire to perform the requested task in two months. So he has empathy for his future self and does the hard work of saying no right away instead of kicking the can.
Both Sahil and Maya are convinced that saying no to undesirable requests is essential in order to build a truly happy life. Don’t let your present self say yes to something you know your future self will kick you for.
