Ground Yourself in Your Why

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

Another reason why people lose momentum with their goals is because they have lost track of why they started in the first place.

Successful businessman and podcaster, Ed Mylett, often tells the story of why he started taking his health seriously.  Ed was at a doctor appointment, and his doctor asked if Ed had kids.  Ed said yes, a young son and daughter.  The doctor then asked Ed if he wanted to be able to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding.  Ed said of course he wanted that.  Then the doctor told him that he would have to change some things regarding his health if he wanted to make that a reality.  That statement from the doctor changed how Ed thought about his health.  His health became something he took seriously because it was now grounded in a why.  So if Ed is ever feeling like skipping a workout or eating food that’s not good for him, he reloads the emotional charge powering his goal and chants to himself, “Bella’s wedding, Bella’s wedding.”

If you’re feeling your momentum for your goal waning, trace the thread back to the beginning of why you started.  If you have a big emotionally charged reason like Ed Mylett did, then sit with that feeling and let it wash over you.  Grounding yourself in your why can be the impetus for continuing on your journey.
