Ideas for Enjoying Social Media Without Mindlessly Wasting Time
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
Many of us, including me, spend more time than we like on social media. If one of your goals for the new year is to waste less time on social media, here are some ideas for how to get started.
First, setting the goal and intention to waste less time in this way is a great first step. This decision sets your brain to look for alternative ways to fill the cracks of time in your day.
Next, proactively decide how you want to use the time you would normally thoughtlessly give to social media. If you have a goal to read more in the next year, then using an app like Libby to have audio to e-books readily available on your phone in between events can help you reach your reading goal. Maybe you want to have a puzzle or crochet project readily available in your home to work on at night before bed. The world is your oyster. Pivot that doomscrolling time to something you find worthwhile.
Set timers on your worst social media offenders. Decide how much time you are willing to give to these platforms and have your phone turn them off on your phone once you’ve reached that limit.
Don’t scroll your feed. Go to the accounts you find valuable to look for any updates and then shut the app down once you’ve checked.
Curate your following list. Unfollow any accounts that don’t bring worth to your life. Perhaps make this a yearly or quarterly habit.
Social media can be a fun way to flit away time. But if it’s bringing more cons than pros to your life, then hopefully some of the suggestions above can help limit it in your life.
