No Fear

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

Is one of your goals this year to overcome a fear?  Fear is amplified the further we stand from it.  But when we come closer, it dissipates.  Action reduces fear.  This year, consider creating a fear list as part of your goals.

Break each fear into three to five small steps that will move you closer to confronting that fear.  For example, if you fear asking for a promotion at work, what are five small steps that you can take to move you closer to overcoming that fear (updating your work brag list, meeting with a trusted coworker to discuss strategy, practicing your pitch, scheduling a meeting with your manager, etc.)?  If you fear heights, what tiny steps can you take to inch closer to overcoming that fear?  What if you fear public speaking or spiders or quitting your job or breaking up with someone?  What steps can you take this year to inch you closer to those fears?

After you take each step, celebrate, even if you’re still afraid.  Each time you step closer to the fear, you’re lessening its power over you, and that’s something to be commemorated.
