No Goals? No Problem.
By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer
I’ve been writing all year about goals. For many, goals are motivating forces that keep them striving for better versions of themselves. But for others, goals are oppressive and to be avoided. Who is right? The good news is, in your own life, you get to decide!
There are people who don’t set goals, and they have many reasons for not doing so. Some believe goals focus too much on external validation and they want to focus on internal validation. For example, if a person sets a goal to write a New York Times Bestseller, they’re making a goal for themselves that requires external validation. They may have no control over their book reaching the bestsellers list. Similarly, a person who writes a song doesn’t have control over Grammy nominations. A movie actor doesn’t have control over Oscar nominations. A scientist doesn’t have control over the Nobel Prize board. Maybe the non-goal-oriented person simply feels a book inside that wants to come to fruition, and they want to enjoy the process of birthing that work of art.
People who avoid goals often still look for ways to challenge themselves, but they don’t pick a benchmark to hit. There’s no destination. They simply want to enjoy the process of daily betterment. If you feel allergic to goals, know you’re in good company. They’re not mandatory. No goals? No problem.
