Planting Goals in Reality

By Tana M. Mann Easton, Lead Efficiency Engineer

We’ve decided to make progress on a goal this year.  Great!  A decision has been made.  But now what?  How do we take ideas of our goals from theory to reality?

First, we need to decide what kind of cadence we would like to commit to in order to feel like we’re making headway with the goal.  Would we feel successful if we do this once this year?  Twice?  Every month?  Once a week?  Three times a week?  Every day?  Once we choose the time commitment that feels right, then we should look at our calendar to plant the goal into reality.  If we’re wanting to start a habit and do it at least 3 times a week, then we should look at our calendar for next week and plot out at least three times when we can reasonably assume that we can perform the task.  We might want to plot out 4 times just in case life happens on one of the other times and we can’t get to it.  If we can’t find 4 times next week to make the goal happen, then we may need to adjust what our version of success with the goal looks like or we need to move some things around on our calendars in order to accommodate it.

Most of us won’t magically find time to make progress on the goals that we set.  In order to make them a reality, we need to plant them in our calendars and then execute.  So crack out those calendars, we have goals to reach.
